Geography
Our Curriculum Intent
In Geography, we will 'bring out the best' in our students by stimulating their interest in the world; fostering their understanding of natural processes shaping our planet; exploring human interactions that impact local and global society and the environment.
Students are encouraged to think like geographers, with five core elements of geographical investigation made explicit to students:
- understanding places and processes
- understanding people
- using maps and data
- fieldwork
- critical thinking
Within the curriculum we explore diverse topics covering the UK and countries across all continents. Through investigating physical environments, population dynamics and patterns of inequality, they gain a balanced understanding of what makes places unique, and how different places interact on a local to global scale.
Fieldwork during KS3, KS4 and KS5 enhances students' real-world understanding and independent study skills. Local studies, coastal trips and urban fieldwork expose students to diverse environments, prompting consideration of the challenges faced by people in each location. This fosters empathy and a broader understanding of UK citizens' varied experiences.
Our overall goal is to equip students to be well informed and active citizens, able to contribute usefully to society at a local, national and global scale.

National Curriculum Mapping
Our schemes of work are aligned with the National Curriculum and are designed to at least meet its requirements, going beyond them in many respects.

The National Curriculum Purpose of Study for Geography is as follows:
A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
